when i was younger i asked my grandmother
how she held onto her youth
she stared at her whiskey then she answered “vanity”
surely it must’ve been true
and if so i’ve nothing to lose

the first time i bled well i panicked and called her
the next thing i knew she was there
picking me up from my dad’s in ohio
knowing he wasn’t prepared
as only a woman could care

elegance, beauty, good posture, the traits of a lady
she made me aware
audrey, clark gable, the red shoes she showed me
the glamour seemed almost unfair
how could life ever compare

walking alone in the nursery i miss her
i think how she used to take me
i stare at small statues of angels and buddhas
who all seem to sit so serene
as wind chimes they dance softly

so what makes me come off angelic you ask i say
“something she passed down to me”
my mind maps a garden where she’ll come for tea
and say “goose, it’s so lovely”
a tea party fit for a queen
